Hemingway’s Footprint on Cody Preserved

February 4, 2011
By

When Ev and Susan Diehl took over a historic inn in Cody, Wyo., they found plenty of clutter in the basement, and a few treasures hidden amid it. One of them was Ernest Hemingway’s signature on the guest registry. He signed in on Oct. 16, 1932.

“It was here that Hemingway mailed the final draft of Death in the Afternoon,” writes Martin Kidston in the Billings Gazette. Not a bad claim to fame.

A rare photo of Hemingway on the Pilar hangs in his room at the Chamberlin Inn, so you can stay there in Hemingway’s company.
